Old Fishergate House What to see in St Andrews and Beyond

 

  • St Andrews Castle and visitor centre - see the famous bottle dungeon and the mine and countermine.
  • St Andrew Cathedral and St Rule Tower - climb the tower for the best view in St Andrews and visit the Cathedral (ruins) at one time the largest in Scotland before being burned down!
  • St Andrews University - some lovely buildings like St Salvators Chapel in North Street or wander round St Mary's in South Street.
  • St Andrews Preservation Trust Museum in North Street.
  • St Andrews Museum in Kinburn Castle , Double Dykes Road, St Andrews.
  • British Golf Museum - just behind the R and A Clubhouse, ideal for golf enthusiasts.
  • St Andrews Aquarium - on the Scores by the Martyrs Monument - excellent for all ages and worth a visit.
  • Outwith St Andrews visits to Cambo House to see the snowdrops in the Spring, Falkland Palace, Kellie Castle and the picturesque fishing villages of Crail, Anstruther, Pittenweem and St Monans are all worth seeing.
  • Anstruther is the home of the Scottish Fisheries Museum and in the summer (weather permitting) you can take a boat trip to the Isle of May Nature Reserve in the Firth of Forth.
  • The Secret Bunker somewhere between Crail and Kingsbarns is an example of a deep underground bunker built to house the country's leaders in the event of a nuclear war and is a popular tourist attraction for both young and old.
  • Art Galleries can be found in Crail - the Jerdan Gallery while Pittenweem Arts Festival hosts well-known artists and sculptors. Visit to Crail Pottery or Griselda Hill Pottery in Ceres should be considered too.
  • Eden Mill, Distillery and Brewery. Located in Guardbridge. Learn about how craft, limited edition whisky, gin and award winning beer is made.
  • Kingsbarns Distillery. On the Cambo Estate, 6 miles from town with a lovely visitor centre.

Further Afield

  • Glamis Castle just north of Dundee - Scone Palace in Perth - the Discovery Centre in Dundee to see Captain Scott's ship Discovery - the Scottish Antique and Arts Centre (just west of Dundee off the road to Perth) which has umpteen antique shops under one roof and a great place for lunch. All these attractions are within a hours drive.
  • Edinburgh - Scotland's Capital is just over an hour by car and is full of beautiful buildings, historic sites, the new Scottish Parliament, the famous Castle with its Esplanade, the Royal Mile and Holyrood Palace and of course fantastic pubs, restaurants and shops.
  • Stirling is a little bit further but worth it to see the Castle and Wallace's Monument (of Braveheart fame). Try returning via Gleneagles Hotel for tea or go to Crieff and see the Famouse Grouse Whisky Visitor Centre.
